Oral Histories

Robert Shakey

Robert served in the Army Air Corps from 1944-1945, and was stationed on Attu at Alexi Point. He remembers a radio hut (Pacific Hut) on Adak on Mount Moffit, where high winds would continuously drift the entrance deep in snow. Interview by Chris Chiei on April 14, 2004.

RS: "The radio guys got fed up with shoveling out the entrance, so they put a ladder in the arctic entry and made a trap door in the roof so they could climb out."

On Pacific Huts:

RS: "When the snow got heavy, the roof would start to flatten out. That's when you knew it was time to start shoveling."
